Innovator Update: Los Deliveristas Unidos

When The Workers Lab first started working with Los Deliveristas Unidos a few years ago, the organization was a member-supported collective that was organizing app-based food delivery workers for better working conditions and livable wages in New York City. The pandemic had a profound impact on demand for both food delivery and protections for delivery workers. Los Deliveristas Unidos, which is organized by the Worker’s Justice Project, grew rapidly because they were focused on helping workers organize to secure healthy and safe work environments, pay transparency, and long-term pathways for success. 

This section from a recent New Labor Forum article provides useful context on the challenges app-based food delivery drivers routinely faced.

“At the start of 2022, DoorDash was paying deliveristas an average of $7.87 an hour, well below New York City’s minimum of $14.00. To reach the minimum, workers were expected to make up the difference in tips. Out of their meager wages, they were also expected to purchase and maintain their own e-bikes—which can cost anywhere from $600 to more than $1,000—and provide essentials such as gloves and other protective equipment, phones, and insulated delivery bags. A deliverista could rack up as much as $10,000 in annual business expenses.[3] They support themselves and their families on what’s left.”

Los Deliveristas offered their members an opportunity to organize for change. They led an effort with the New York City Council to pass landmark legislation, six bills in total, that helped protect deliveristas in their workplaces, including a mandate to provide public shelter areas with bathrooms and charging stations. Their efforts reflect years of efforts to help these workers gain protections and rights that bring their work within the laws and norms of regular employment.

Since receiving an Innovation Fund award two years ago, the organization has blossomed. It has diversified its funding to include support from a range of supporters, including partners like The Workers Lab, the New York City Council, and community foundations. 

“With support from the Innovation Fund and other supporters, we are building first-in-the-country infrastructure for delivery workers that offers them help with all aspects of their work, including improvements to worker policies, the creation of a hub for them to connect, and the development of a community that can demand a safety net that fights against the abuses these workers experience,” Ligia Guallpa, executive director of the Worker’s Justice Project, said. 

The group’s work continues to expand, including in other cities where delivery workers are hoping to replicate the success they’ve seen in New York City. As the New Labor Forum article shared, “Los Deliveristas Unidos has taken on the apps and made a larger point: Together, gig workers—like any other workers—can win a measure of justice.” As workers nationwide continue to organize and ask for justice, we’re thrilled that Los Deliveristas is ready to answer the call. Cuando The Workers Lab comenzó a trabajar con Los Deliveristas Unidos hace algunos años, la organización era una colectiva apoyada por sus propios miembros que organizaba  trabajadores de entrega de alimentos basados en aplicaciones para obtener mejores condiciones laborales y salarios dignos en la ciudad de Nueva York. La pandemia tuvo un profundo impacto en la demanda tanto de entrega de alimentos así como de protecciones para los que reparten la comida. El grupo creció rápidamente porque se concentró en ayudar a los trabajadores a organizarse para garantizar condiciones de trabajo seguros y saludables, como transparencia en salarios y vías de largo plazo hacia el éxito.

En un artículo reciente del New Labor Forum proporciona un contexto útil sobre los desafíos que enfrentan habitualmente los repartidores de alimentos basados en aplicaciones. 

“A principios del 2022, Doordash pagaba a los repartidores un promedio de $7.87 dólares por hora, menos del salario mínimo de $14.00 dólares por hora en la ciudad de Nueva York. Para alcanzar el salario mínimo, [las companías] esperaban que los trabajadores compensaran la diferencia con sus propinas. Los Deliveristas ofrecieron a sus miembros la oportunidad de organizarse para crear un cambio. Lideraron un esfuerzo con el Ayuntamiento de Nueva York para aprobar una legislación histórica, seis leyes en total, las que ayudarían a proteger a los deliveristas en sus lugares de trabajo, incluyendo un mandato para proporcionar áreas de refugio con baños y estaciones de recarga. Sus esfuerzos reflejan años de esfuerzos para ayudar a estos trabajadores a obtener protecciones y derechos que sitúan su trabajo dentro de las leyes del empleo regular.    

Desde que la organización recibió el premio “Innovation Fund” hace dos años, la organización ha florecido. Ha diversificado su financiación para incluir el apoyo de una variedad de partidarios, incluidos financiadores como The Workers Lab, el Ayuntamiento de Nueva York y fundaciones comunitarias.
